Barcelona is getting ready to host the 52nd Conde de Godó BMW Sailing Trophy, featuring nearly 100 boats and 14 nationalities.

With the debut of the Promoción class and renewed momentum for the Godó Women’s Cup, the Trophy continues to make strides in inclusion and diversity.

Barcelona, May 21, 2025 – The main hall of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB) hosted this morning the official presentation of the 52nd Conde de Godó BMW Sailing Trophy, which will take place from May 28 to June 1. With registration set to close on May 23, the organizers expect to gather around 100 boats and nearly 800 sailors from 14 different countries, once again establishing the event as one of the premier regattas in the Mediterranean.

The presentation was attended by Jordi Puig, President of the RCNB, accompanied by Gonzalo Sanjuan, Marketing Director of BMW Spain; Joan Balaguer, Head of the Cruising Committee of the Catalan Sailing Federation; Ana Godó, Vice President of the RCNB and representative of the Godó family; Pablo Garriga, Commodore of the RCNB and Regatta Director; and Captain Emilio Aceña Medina, Naval Commander of Barcelona.

Jordi Puig, president of the RCNB, welcomed the authorities and the media and emphasized the growth of the event: “A few years ago, we set ourselves the goal of reaching 100 boats — what we called ‘Objective 100.’ Today, we’re close to achieving it in a regatta that is the oldest in the Mediterranean and a key reference on the Mediterranean coast, reinforcing Barcelona as a nautical capital.”

Regarding the new features of this edition, he highlighted: “The introduction of the ORC Promoción class aims to open the regatta to a broader audience — sailors who usually take part in cruising races throughout the year, but who don’t typically compete in highly technical events. We want to give them the chance to experience this.”

He also emphasized the commitment to women’s sailing: “This is the third consecutive year of the Godó-BMW Women’s Cup, with crews made up of 100% women. This year, we have six teams, a significant step forward in our goal to encourage women’s participation in competitive sailing.” In addition, he announced a new addition to the club’s calendar: “This weekend marks the debut of the BCN Race, a new regatta that will also help with the logistics for boats arriving to compete in the Conde de Godó Trophy.”

Puig concluded by thanking supporters: “I want to thank all the sponsors, especially BMW for their trust as official sponsor, and all the partners who make this regatta possible.”

Pablo Garriga, Commodore of the RCNB and Director of the Regatta, took the opportunity to share the technical details: for this edition, four race courses have been set up to accommodate all participating classes — the first for the ORC 0 to 5 fleet, the second for the ORC Promoción class, the third for the ORC A Dos class, and the fourth, exclusively for the J70 one-designs, which include the Godó-BMW Women’s Cup.

The ORC A Dos category celebrates its fourth consecutive year, with 11 offshore routes planned toward the north, the Ebro Delta, and the Balearic Islands. The Joan Guiu Prize will also be contested. In the J70 class, 16 teams are expected, and the RCNB takes this opportunity to announce that it will host the J70 European Championship in 2026. The club is also particularly pleased that young sailors from its 420 team will join this category this year.

The new ORC Promoción class has been very well received, with 16 boats already registered, demonstrating a growing base of enthusiasts looking to make the leap into technical racing. In the premier ORC 0 class, at least six boats are expected to participate, allowing for a dedicated classification.

Joan Balaguer, representative of the Catalan Sailing Federation, added that having a flagship regatta like the Trofeo Godó is a true source of pride. The Federation thanks and congratulates the RCNB for its ability to attract so many teams and for its commitment to the growth of the sport, especially with initiatives like the inclusion of the Promoción class, which allows new crews to join this major event. It is a true sailing festival in Barcelona.

Gonzalo Sanjuan, Marketing Director of BMW Spain, expressed the brand’s commitment to the event and to the values it shares with the sailing world. He stated that it is a joy for BMW to participate once again in this 52nd edition of the Trofeo Conde de Godó and to lend its name to such an iconic regatta. BMW shares with sailing the values of effort, improvement, excellence, and sustainability. Sailing also represents enjoyment, a core value of the brand, whose slogan is “Do you like driving?” He wished all sailors — and especially the female sailors — to enjoy this major event, Barcelona, and the wonderful Mediterranean Sea.

Organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona with the collaboration of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and the Catalan Sailing Federation, the 52nd Conde de Godó BMW Sailing Trophy is sponsored by BMW and supported by La Vanguardia, the Barcelona City Council, and the Government of Catalonia. Collaborators include Mapfre, De Antonio Yachts, Veri, Royal Bliss, Estrella Damm, Isdin, and Gramona.
